Collegiate Cattle Growers Association

The Collegiate Cattle Growers Association was established in the Fall of 2005 by a group of students who wanted to bring their love of cattle and the beef industry to the University of Arizona. The CCGA is made up of primarily animal science students, but also has members from all over the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The group has several major projects each year for members to participate in.

Events:

CCGAShow Heifer Project

Each winter the Arizona National Livestock Show, held the last week in December, hosts the Sun Classic Heifer Show & Sale. This sale offers producers the opportunity to show and sell show heifer prospects through the Arizona National.

The U of A has created a partnership with several of these breeders and they now send their heifers to the University in October and students prepare them for the show. Students are responsible for feeding, halter-breaking, working hair, clipping and preparing the cattle for the show. The students then care for the animals during the Arizona National, exhibit them in the show and take them through the sale. The University then receives a portion of the proceeds. It is a great chance for students to get hands-on experience with cattle, learn and have a great time!

CCGAJackpot Show

The CCGA held it's inaugural Livestock Jackpot Show this year at the U of A Farm. The show boasted a steer and heifer show, as well as market lamb and market goat shows. Students planned the event, obtained sponsors, hired judges, organized the event and sold concessions.

The CCGA was proud to give away prizes such as show boxes, embroidered jackets, show sticks, sheep and goat blankets and much more. It was also a great opportunity for club members to get involved with livestock shows.
