Degree Options
The Department of Animal Sciences offers 4 different degree options within the major, allowing students to specialize their degree to fit their individual interests and career goals.
Animal Science Degree Options:
Industry Option
The Industry Option is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of careers in livestock production, agribusiness, and management. The Industry curriculum combines the core animal science courses, such as nutrition, anatomy and physiology, with a sampling of classes in agriculture economics, agriculture marketing, business management, communications, leadership, personal development.
For students interested in dairy science, the Industry Option also offers a Dairy pathway that focuses the core animal science courses specifically on dairy science. So, students take classes such as Dairy Physiology and Diary Herd Management in place of other Animal Science electives.
The Industry Option also includes a minor, which allows students to choose 18 to 20 units of course work in any subject area they please to compliment their animal science major.
For students interested in food safety, the Food Safety option provides the science and industry curriculum needed for a wide array of positions in this field.

Equine Science Option
The Equine Option prepares students to work in the horse industry. Within the equine option there are two pathways offered, industry and science.
The Equine Industry pathway prepares students to work in the management, production and business segments of the equine industry by offering students animal science classes focused specifically on horses, such as horsemanship, equine nutrition and equine reproduction. Equine Industry also requires students to take agribusiness, marketing, management, communication and leadership courses to prepare them for a variety of careers.
The Equine Science pathway also provides students with the same equine based animal science courses. However, students also complete a set of science intensive courses, such as biochemistry, organic chemistry and physics, in place of the business-based classes offered in the Industry option. The Science pathway is a great option for students preparing for veterinary school, medical school, dental school or any other professional school.

This option also requires additional math classes including statistics. Within the option there is also a Biotechnology Pathway. This pathway offers students a curriculum option with classes in humanities, social sciences, developmental biology, genetics, genomics, and molecular biology. The Science & Pre-Professional option is a great choice for students preparing for a Master's or ph.D, veterinary school, medical school, dental school or any other professional school.
